Alejandra Contreras
Alejandra
Contreras has performed in San Francisco for many years. From
2002 to 2005, she was an active student of the Community Music Center
in San Francisco. She performed in many recitals and was part of the
chamber music program. She also participated in chamber ensembles,
primarily piano trios and quartets. While studying under the
supervision of Jennifer Peringer, her repertoire included chamber
music compositions by Mozart and Beethoven. She studied violin for
three years with India Cooke, who helped her prepare for many solo
performances of pieces by Bach, Vivaldi and other composers.
Ms.
Contreras attended City College of San Francisco, where she
participated in the orchestra for almost three years. Repertoire
included works by Bach, Tchaikovsky, Telemann, Geminiani, Hindemith,
Handel and Bartok. While at City College, Ms. Contreras began playing
the cello, which she studied with Dr. Richard Fenner for two years
and also played in the orchestra.
After
receiving her Associate of Arts degree in General Education, Ms.
Contreras transferred to San Francisco State University where she
studied violin with Jassen Todorov and viola with Paul Yarbrough. In
addition to performing with the university’s orchestra, she was
part of the chamber music program, led by the Alexander String
Quartet. In the summer of 2007, she participated in a chamber music
program in Florence, Italy, also under the supervision of the
Alexander String quartet. She recently received her teaching
credential in music.
Ms.
Contreras is currently part of the "St. Cecilia" music
group, which plays for weddings and other events, the all-female
mariachi group "Orgullo Mexicano," and “Tango Revolution
Orchestra,” which performs regularly at San Francisco’s Caffe
Trieste. In addition to classical music, Ms. Contreras enjoys playing
Mexican folk, traditional mariachi, and other genres of music, such
as world and experimental.
