JEREMY PASS

Jeremy Pass

Jeremy began studying piano in Canada when he was three years old, and at the age of five won his first competition at a music festival. At eight he won the Armadillo Piano Competition, a national piano competition in the United States to perform with the University of Texas Orchestra. Over the following ten years he placed first in eighteen competitions for solo piano, three for piano-duo, and in ten for solo cello at the Kiwanis Music Festival in Halifax, Nova Scotia. While studying at the Maritime Conservatory of Music in Halifax from 1992 to 1998, he was the recipient of twelve scholarships and bursaries. In 2000 Jeremy was accepted to McGill University, where he completed his bachelor of music degree in Classical Piano Performance under Marina Mdivani, a student of Emil Gilels. Jeremy also had the opportunity to perform in a variety of music ensembles, and to sing choral repertoire with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

With ten years teaching experience Jeremy offers fine-tuned, developed programs designed to familiarize students with the challenges of piano playing, while building their appreciation of music. In the teaching studio areas of focus are performance methods, sight reading, music theory (the language of music), and ear training (aurally identifying patterns in music). Particular emphasis is placed on developing proper technique: finger control, agility, and strength. Students also learn to allocate specific movements to different parts of the hand and arm, reducing tension and significantly improving the quality of their work. With these skills, a greater comprehension of music, and a little practice, Jeremy's students perform their repertoire with comfort, confidence, and creative musical expression.
